Uncovering Internal Processes of European Cluster Initiatives: Intermediary Actors and Activities

Clusters are important features of regional development (Porter, 2000). Within clusters there can exist intermediary organizations such as cluster initiatives (CIs), which are the focus in this paper. These mission and activities of cluster initiatives characterize them as “middlehands” organizations which perform intermediary roles as brokers, facilitators, promoters, and providers of meeting places (Laur, Klofsten & Bienkowska, 2012; Lundequist & Power, 2002). Cluster initiatives became a subject facilitating recent approach of looking into clustering concept as motors of collaborations and networking which help clusters development (Lagendijk, 1999).
